Návrat laureáta předešlého ročníku je pro Kocianku velkou událostí. Dvojnásob to platí v případě nyní čtrnáctileté Lany Zorjan, která se stala absolutní vítězkou 64. ročníku a Ústí si podmanila svou srdečností a upřímností. Letos přijela opět v doprovodu maminky Arabely a pedagožky Ivany Aćimoski-Žikić. „Pomohla mi vyvinout se z malého fidlajícího dítěte ve skutečnou houslistku,” říká upřímně o své učitelce. A kdo je ještě součástí vítězného týmu? No přeci kočka Ellie! “Minulý rok mi tady na Kociance neskutečně pomohla zvládat stres. Kdybych ji neměla s sebou, nejspíš bych nevyhrála,” přiznává sympatická srbská houslistka.
Ráda bych začala touto fotkou z loňského vyhlášení. Jak jste se v té chvíli cítila?
Tahle fotka je má oblíbená! Byla jsem v šoku. Nemyslela jsem si, že mám šanci, takže mě opravdu překvapilo, když mě vyhlásili jako laureátku. Nečekala jsem to a stále jsem se s tím nesrovnala.
Takže vítězství nebylo vaším hlavním cílem?
Trochu ano, ale nemyslela jsem si, že by to vyšlo. Alespoň ne ještě teď, když mi bylo 13. Neměla jsem absolutně žádná očekávání.
Jak byste s odstupem jednoho roku ohodnotila svůj výkon?
Do soutěže jsem šla s nulovými očekáváními. Doufala jsem třeba v třetí místo ve své kategorii, nic víc, i to by byl obrovský úspěch vzhledem k prestiži soutěže.
Na začátku skladby jsem udělala drobnou chybu, trochu mi to ujelo. A jelikož se to stalo v pátém taktu na začátku, tak jsem si říkala: „No, a je konec.“ Když jsem potom postoupila do druhého kola, byla jsem překvapená, ale motivovalo mě to podat dobrý výkon. Zahrála jsem nejlepší vystoupení svého života.
Porota vaše vystoupení označila jako “plné emocí”. Znamená to, že jste si ho užila?
Ano, užila jsem si ho moc. Navíc je tu úžasná akustika, musím to zmínit, protože jsem neviděla moc uměleckých škol s takovou akustikou. Vystupujícím opravdu pomůže.
Hrála jste Saint Saënsa – co vás motivovalo k výběru tohoto konkrétního repertoáru?
Hrála jsem Saint-Saënsův Koncert číslo 3, tuším že v h moll. Zpočátku se mi skladba moc nezamlouvala, ale během hraní jsem se do ní zamilovala. Samozřejmě je to také jeden z důvodů mého vítězství, porota mi pak tuto skladbu určila i pro závěrečný koncert.
Nejste první laureátkou ze Srbska, před vámi titul obdržel Stefan Milenkovič. Vy dva jste se vloni potkali, při jaké příležitosti?
Vlastně jsme se potkali už v březnu 2021 během online semináře. Je to vynikající učitel. Motivoval mě k tomu, abych se stala nejen lepší houslistkou, ale i lepším člověkem. Později v létě jsem se zúčastnila jeho masterclass v Čačaku. V roce 2022 to bylo ještě lepší. Mám velkou radost, že dalším laureátem ze Srbska jsem právě já.
Dalo by se říct, že je Milenkovič váš hudební vzor?
Rozhodně. Jedním z mnoha, mezi další patří třeba Maxim Vengerov, Hilary Hahn nebo María Dueñas. A samozřejmě moje učitelka, je úžasná. Pomohla mi vyvinout se z malého fidlajícího dítěte ve skutečnou houslistku. Pracuje se mnou od mých deseti let.
Otevřel vám laureátský titul dveře do světa?
Otevřel, hodně. A nejedná se jenom o nové možnosti, ale uvědomila jsem si, že jsem vážně schopná houslistka a dokážu vyhrát velkou soutěž. Pomohlo mi to vybudovat sebevědomí. Díky tomu má kariéra poskočila, mám teď větší ohlas nejen v Srbsku a tady v Česku, ale i v celé Evropě. Jsem za to neskonalé vděčná.
Minulý rok jste hrála na mnoha místech, mohla byste zmínit ta, která pro vás byla nejvýznamnější?
Kociánka mi otevřela mnoho možností. Mezi nejvýznamnější bych zařadila recitály v Lublani, v Koncertní síni Iliji Kolaraca a v Muzeu historie v Bělehradu, v Koncertní síni města Novi Sad, dále pak koncert se symfonickým orchestrem Danube v Budapešti, se sborem Camerata Novi Sad a vystoupení na Exit festivalu se souborem Camerata Balkanika, což bylo první vystoupení klasické hudby na tomto festivalu.
Máte nějaké konkrétní hudební plány do budoucna? Čeho byste ráda dosáhla?
Ráda bych se stala především sólistkou, zjistila jsem, že hraní sólo mi vyhovuje mnohem víc než třeba v orchestru. Ráda vystupuji ve velkých sálech. Jeden cíl jsem si vytyčila před pár měsíci, a tím je účast na prestižní soutěži pro mládež. Doufám, že se ze mě jednou stane vynikající houslistka a umělkyně.
Chtěla byste v budoucnosti i učit?
Nejspíš ano. Ráda bych pomáhala malým dětem, co s houslemi teprve začínají. Vzpomínám, jak moc mi má učitelka pomohla být lepší umělkyní a člověkem, ráda bych jednoho dne byla takovým vzorem pro někoho jiného.
Moje maminka též učí hru na housle. Když jsem vyrůstala, pozorovala jsem ji a její studenty. Vtipné je, že když mi bylo sotva pár měsíců, vzala jsem si hračku, usadila se u ní a v tichosti poslouchala, jak učí. Její technika a zvuk houslí mi učarovala. Můj tatínek je navíc operní zpěvák, takže svou první operu jsem viděla v hodně raném věku.
Co čtenáře také velmi zajímá, je vaše kočka. Řeknete nám o ní něco?
(smích) Jmenuje se Eliana, ale říkáme jí Ellie. Je to opravdu milé stvoření, neskutečně klidná.
Cestuje s vámi hodně?
Jezdí se mnou úplně všude, je to taková terapeutická kočka pro moji mentální pohodu. Mě má nejradši, což je skvělé, protože máme ještě dvě kočky a ty mě moc nemusí. Když nemají náladu se mazlit, vždy mě praští do obličeje.
Přijela s vámi i nyní?
Ano, je tady. Minulý rok mi tady na Kociance neskutečně pomohla zvládat stres. Soutěže jsou náročné, kdybych ji neměla s sebou, nejspíš bych nevyhrála. Pamatuji si, že večer před druhým kolem jsem začala pod nátlakem brečet, Ellie mi vyskočila na klín a začala mňoukat, jako kdyby chtěla říct: „Přestaň, proč brečíš?“ Začala příst a tím mě uklidnila.
Ve čtvrtek budete v Roškotově divadle hrát s Filharmonií Pardubice. Na co se můžeme těšit, co budete hrát?
Zahrajeme Koncert č. 5, který složil Henri Vieuxtemps. Je to skvělá skladba, silná, ale zároveň plná emocí a technicky náročná. Mám k ní blízko, neboť mi hodně sedne jako umělci. Když jsem ji hrála poprvé, okamžitě jsem se do ní zamilovala kvůli její síle. A přesně taková jsem momentálně i já. Doufám, že předčím očekávání diváků, cvičila jsem víc než kdy předtím.
Plánujete se jít letos podívat i na soutěž a pozdravit některé z účastníků?
Rozhodně. Chci si poslechnout třetí a čtvrtou kategorii. Samozřejmě nemám šanci stihnout všechno, protože musím jít nacvičovat.
Jsou zde i někteří mí přátelé a moc se na ně těším. Pamatuji si, když jsem vloni viděla laureáta 63. soutěže Kaie Gergova, byla jsem úplně zaražená. Nemůžu uvěřit, že letos jsem tou osobou já.
Kocianovo Ústí není jediný festival, na kterém letos vystupujete. Kde jinde vás mohou fanoušci vidět a slyšet?
Hraju ještě na festivalu ve Skutči. Příjemně mě překvapilo, když si mě pozvali na další vystoupení, myslela jsem, že ta rádiová nahrávka a vystoupení v Ústí bude vše. Na koncert se moc těším, vystupování na pódiu mě inspiruje. Na zkouškách nikdy nepodám takový výkon jako při samotném vystoupení, už to tak mám léta. Nemůžu se dočkat, tyhle dva koncerty budou zatím největší, co jsem kdy odehrála.
Co byste řekla, že je klíčem úspěchu na takovéto soutěži?
Minulý rok jsem sem přijela jako dívka bez jakýchkoliv nadějí. A řekla bych, že je lepší se s tím tolik nestresovat. Není dobré říkat si: „Musím to vyhrát!“ Jeden čas jsem to dělala a můj výkon pak nebyl tak dobrý, vystresovalo mě to. Samotná účast na soutěži je obrovský úspěch, mít kuráž vyrazit na tak prestižní akci je obdivuhodné a už to z vás dělá vítěze. Soutěžící by si čas strávený na soutěži měli užít, porota si všimne, když je vám na pódiu příjemně, a emoce, které vložíte do hraní, se přenesou na ni.
It was one of my best performances
A comeback of the Kocianka laureate is always a special event. That is also the case of 14-year-old Lana Zorjan who became the 64th competition laureate and won the hearts of everyone. This year, she returned to Ústí accompanied by her mother, Arabela, and her teacher, Ivana Aćimoski-Žikić. “She has helped me develop from a little kid into a true violinist,” says she about her teacher. Is the winning team complete? Certainly not! We cannot forget Ellie the cat. “Last year at the Kocian competition, she truly helped me cope with all this stress. If I wouldn’t have her, I wouldn’t have won.”
I would like to start with this particular photo. What were your emotions back then?
I love this photo! I was purely shocked! I didn’t think I stood a chance, so I was obviously surprised to hear that I won in the first place. I did not expect anything else. I still cannot process that feeling.
So it was not your main goal to win this competition?
It was my goal but I didn’t think it would actually happen. At least not at this time, at the age of 13. I did not expect absolutely anything. This was purely unexpected.
How would you evaluate your last year’s performance?
I came to the competition with no expectations. I was just hoping for, let’s say, the third prize in my category and nothing more because that would already be a huge achievement for me since this is such a massive competition.
I had a little mishap at the beginning of my performance in the first round, a slip of a finger. And since it happened on the fifth bar in the very beginning, I was thinking: “Okay, I’m out.” And then I went to the second round, which was already surprising, and it encouraged me to play well. And it was one of my best performances at that point.
The jury said that your performance was emotional. Did you enjoy it?
Yeah, I truly enjoyed it. And the acoustics are also amazing, which I have to mention because there are pretty much no art schools that have such amazing acoustics. That helps the performer a lot.
And I would say that the Kocian competition changed my life a lot. I mean, it’s a massive competition and I think it’s pretty cool to be its laureate.
You played Saint Saëns – why did you choose this repertoire?
I played the composition Saint-Saëns Concerto No. 3, I think, in H-Minor. I didn’t like the first movement that much. But I fell in love with that concerto when playing it. And obviously, it is the reason why I won this competition because the jury chose me to play that concerto at the finishing concert.
You are not the first Serbian to win the laureate title. The other is Stefan Milenkovich. I know that you two met last year – on which occasion?
We actually met in 2021 for the first time, I had an online class in March, and that was my first meeting with professor Stefan Milenkovich. He is an incredible professor. He encourages me so much to become a better person, not only a better violinist. And then, in 2021, I went to his masterclass in the summer in Cacak. And in 2022, it was even better. I’m just so honoured to be the next laureate after him from Serbia.
Is he your music role model?
Yeah, definitely. One of many; I can name Maxim Vengerov, Hilary Hahn, and also María Dueñas. And also my professor. She’s such an amazing woman. She has helped me develop from a little kid into a true violinist. And she has worked with me since I was ten and a half.
Where did the laureate title get you? What doors did it open for you?
In one word – many. It’s not only opened so many doors for me, but it also helped me realize that I am a good violinist. And I realized that I can win a big competition. It helped me build up my self-esteem. It pushed me forward so much and now I have a bigger name in Serbia, here in the Czech Republic, and around Europe. I’m just really thankful for everything.
Last year you played in many places. Can you name some that were important to you?
Kocian opened many doors to concerts for me. Some of the most notable ones are a recital in Ljubljana, Slovenia, a recital in the Endowment of Ilija Kolarac and Museum of History in Belgrade, a recital in the City concert Hall of Novi Sad, a concert with symphony orchestra Danube in Budapest, Hungary, concert with Camerata Novi Sad in Synagogue, concert with Camerata Balkanika for the Exit festival which marked playing classical music for the first time in festival’s history.
Do you have any concrete music life plans? What do you want to achieve?
I definitely want to become a violin soloist, first and foremost, because I have found myself truly loving being a soloist much more than, let’s say, being in an orchestra. I love to perform a lot, all over the world in big concert halls. And one of my goals that appeared a couple of months ago is to attend a prestigious competition for seniors. I am hoping that I will grow into a great violinist and I will become a good artist.
Do you want to teach in the future?
Yes, probably. I would like to help little kids who are starting to play the violin. I know how much my professor helps me and how much she’s helped me to become a better violinist and person. I would like to be that person for somebody else.
My mother is a violin teacher too. I have grown up watching her teaching her students. And this is a really funny thing – when I was just a couple of months old, I would bring some of my toys, crawl to my mother teaching violin, sit there, and listen to the violin in silence. I was so mesmerized by the sound of the violin and by her teaching. My dad is an opera singer, I attended my first opera at just a couple of months old.
What the readers really want to know is everything about your cat! What is her name and what is her main mission?
(laugh) Her name is Eliana, we call her Ellie. She is such a sweet little creature; she’s always laid back.
Does she travel a lot?
She travels everywhere with me and she is my mental health buddy, a therapy cat. I’m her favourite person, which is great because our other two cats don’t like me that much. When they’re not in the mood for cuddling, they will just slap me in the face.
Is she here with you in Litomyšl?
She’s here with me. Last year at the Kocian competition, she truly helped me cope with all this stress. Competitions are stressful. So, if I didn’t get that cat, I wouldn’t have won. I remember the night before the second round, I started crying from the stress and Ellie came into my lap, and she started meowing, as if to say “Stop crying. Why are you crying?” She started purring and it calmed me down completely.
On Thursday you play with Pardubice Philharmonic in Roškot Theatre. What can we look forward to? What are you playing there?
I will be playing the Vieuxtemps’ Concerto No. 5. It is a great concerto, powerful, but at the same time emotional, and technically difficult. I have a connection with that concerto because it fits my character as a player. The first day that I started playing it, I immediately fell in love with it because it has so much power. And that’s the type of player I am, at least currently. I hope that I will exceed everybody’s expectations because I have been practising a lot more than ever.
Are you planning to go see this year’s competitors playing and say hi to them?
Yes, definitely. I want to listen to the third and fourth categories. Obviously, not the whole time because it will be long and I will not have the time because I will have to practice.
I have some friends there and I’m just really looking forward to being there. And I remember last year when I saw Kai Gergov, who is the laureate of the 63rd competition, I was just stunned. It’s still incredible to me that I’m now going to be that person.
Kocian Ústí is not the only festival in the Czech Republic that you are playing at. Where else can we see you?
There’s a festival in Skuteč. I was pleasantly surprised that they even called me for another performance because I thought that I would only have the radio recording and the performance here at Kocian Ústí. And I’m still so excited to perform because I love the stage. I live for the stage and it inspires me so much. And I always play not as well at the rehearsals as I do during the performances. It has been like that for years. So I guess it’s the stage that inspires me so much and I’m just so excited because these two concerts will be the biggest that I’ve played so far.
What do you think is the key to success in this kind of competition?
Last year, I came here as a girl who did not have any expectations. And I think that it’s better not to put pressure on yourself. You can’t tell yourself: “I just have to win!” I did that at some point and then I would not play as well. I would just stress myself out. Even coming to this competition is a huge success because having the courage to be here at such a prestigious event with all these amazing violinists is such a great honour and it’s already making you a winner. I think that you should enjoy your time on the stage because the judges will take notice of the comfort and emotion that you put into your playing, and it will transfer to them.
